The NHS is preparing for a bad flu season

One of the strains circulating this year – H3N2 – has been dubbed the Aussie flu because it is the same strain that is a big problem new- this is due to Australia’s new.

Australia 2017 flu season was the worst the country has experienced in nearly a decade.

Experts are waiting to see whether the same will happen in the UK, after the recent rise in cases.

Every winter there are several strains circulating and Aussie flu or H3N2 is one of them. This is the influenza viruses that appear to cause more severe infections in children and the elderly.

Most people will recover in about a week and do not need special treatment, apart from a little rest, some paracetamol or ibuprofen and drink plenty of fluids.

But for some – a very old, very young or those with existing health conditions such as heart disease -. Flu can be deadly

The UK is seeing a mix of flu circulating types including influenza B and H3N2 strains.

H3N2 is not new. It’s about last winter as well.

Each strain of flu, including H3N2, can be dangerous for people who are prone to it.

The experience of last winter showed parents are a group at high risk for H3N2

The influenza virus is given different names based on their type -. A, B and C. A is generally the most serious while C is usually a mild infection. They can be subdivided in accordance with the proteins that they carry on their surface. This is called the H and N antigens.

The main strain circulating this winter A (H3N2), A (H1N1) and B.

reception Hospitals and GP visits for influenza has seen a sharp increase go into 2018, and although these figures are higher than last winter they were nowhere near as high as in 2009 when the swine flu pandemic hit the UK.

Professor Paul Cosford, Medical Director, Public Health England said: “As we expected this time of year, the level of flu have risen this week data showed us that many people are visiting doctors with flu symptoms and, we see more people were hospitalized with the flu, the vaccine is the best defense we have against the spread of the flu and is not too late to get vaccinated. “

this vaccine is designed to protect against this type of flu circulating in any particular season ,

Every year, the World Health Organization review the global situation and recommending that flu strains should go into a vaccine to be produced for the next season.

This year’s flu jab is designed to protect against H3N2 as well as several other types.

Vaccination is the best protection we have against the flu.

But the flu is unpredictable. Flu virus continues to mutate and change, so it is a moving target to fight.

Public Health England said typical flu vaccine effectiveness is 40-60%, which means that for every 100 people vaccinated, between 40 and 60 will be protected.

At the risk are advised to have an annual flu jabs for the strain of flu can change from year to year, plus protection from the flu vaccine decreases after about six months.

Adults aged over 65, pregnant women and people with underlying health conditions are advised to get a free flu jab.

a flu nasal spray is available free of charge to children, thought to be major spreaders of flu.

In general, the current flu vaccines tend to work better against influenza B and influenza A / H1N1 virus of H3N2, according to US experts at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

and it is already known that the flu vaccine may work less well in the elderly people because they have a weak immune system

Dr Richard Pebody, from Public Health England, said: “. The flu vaccine this season should prov iding proper protection, similar to last winter, last year the vaccine does not provide sufficient protection for both parents to H3N2.

“that is something we are watching closely to see whether it is the problem this winter. “

What made vaccines may also determine their effectiveness, according to the study.

flu vaccine used in the UK and in many other parts of the world currently grown in eggs chicken and this process can be cumbersome.

A recent study in the journal found parts of the H3N2 flu vaccine does not grow only during this process and the mutation developed.

When they tested the vaccine on humans and animals they found the H3N2 doing a partial job protecting against flu strains.

The vaccine has a 20-30% effectiveness against H3N2.

Experts emphasize this is still our best defense against the virus.

And jab provide excellent protection against other flu strains.

A spokesman for the Public Health UK, said: “While we want these to be higher, it still rates very valuable protection against what could be the illness nasty and sometimes deadly” < p> early indications suggest people vaccinated with a trivalent flu jab will not be protected against one virus circulating B – B / Yamagata. Nasal spray flu immunizations given to children do not protect against this virus, as well as quadrivalent flu jab, however.

Trivalent vaccine will still offer better protection than no vaccine in many cases, even if they may not protect against all strains circulating.

experts recommend that everyone who is eligible for a free flu jab on the NHS should take up the offer.

If you want to protect yourself against the flu and you are not in one group, you can purchase a flu jab from high street pharmacy

People who can get it for free on the NHS include :.

A flu nasal spray is available for three-year-olds and two and a couple of children in primary schools.

Front-line health and social care workers are also entitled to receive a flu vaccine.

flu symptoms came very quickly and can include:

If you develop sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing or start coughing up blood, call 999 or go to A & E

See your GP if:

Flu is highly contagious and easily spread to others. You are more likely to give it to others in the first five days.

Flu is spread of germs from coughing and sneezing, which can live on hands and surfaces for 24 hours.
