Why You May Still Get Sick After a Flu Shot
Why You May Still Get Sick After a Flu Shot

Michael Menna, DO, is a board-certified, actively attending emergency medicine physician at White Plains Hospital in White Plains, New York.

Many of us have heard stories of people who are still sick even after getting, or may have even happened to you. However, this does not mean you are necessarily flu disease itself. While the flu vaccine is a great defense and sometimes life-saving against the most common strains of influenza virus, it will not protect you from all respiratory diseases. Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends annual seasonal flu vaccine for all people over the age of 6 months. There are a number of reasons that can explain after you have the flu vaccination.

It takes two weeks to develop immunity to influenza after you get the vaccine. If you have the flu within two weeks to get a shot, you might catch a virus just before or after you have been vaccinated.

It’s easy to see why someone would believe the flu vaccine gave them the flu right after receiving the vaccine. However, the vaccine is made from killed (shot) or inactive () virus and can not give you flu

Flu shots do not protect against :.

It is still possible-and very likely-that you will get sick at some point during “flu season” with some other diseases that you may mistake it for flu. Just because you had a flu shot, it does not mean you will not get sick at all. You may have similar diseases caused by viruses other than influenza.

flu shot provides protection against certain strains of flu that researchers believe will lead to diseases of the season for most people. Unfortunately, this does not provide coverage for all strains of influenza as possible, and the flu virus mutates and changes each year; Therefore, a new vaccine must be created and given every season.

Sometimes, despite their best efforts and conjecture, researchers and public health officials get it wrong. During the flu season when the main strain of influenza that causes the disease is not included in the vaccine, many people who get the flu shot will still get the flu.

It is still possible to get the flu after having the flu vaccination, either because you are one of the few people who are not fully protected or because of the influenza strain that makes you sick is not included in the vaccine. Even so, you are likely to have serious complications from the flu if you have a shot. This is even more true for older adults and children-both groups are at a higher risk. flu shots work in a way that is slightly different for the two groups, but they are still very important.

In the end, studies have shown that the majority of people are vaccinated against the flu had significantly less severe symptoms and fewer complications when they get sick than those who were not vaccinated.

Anyone over the age of 65 are considered in the high risk category and should have a flu shot every year. the vaccine is not effective enough to prevent the flu in this age group. However, among older adults who do not have chronic illnesses and who do not live in nursing homes, the shot is 40 to 70% effective in preventing flu-related doctor visits.

An adult who lives in a nursing home or have a chronic disease have a 50% to 60% higher than those hospitalized due to pneumonia and influenza. In addition, 70 to 90% of seasonal flu-related deaths have occurred in people over age 65. Because people in this age group are at severe complications from the flu, it is also very important for those who care for them to be immunized.

It can be frustrating to develop significant respiratory disease in the same year you are proactive and got a flu vaccination. Remember, however, that the pain does not mean the vaccine is not doing its job. And even if you really do get the flu, it does not mean the shots are not going to work for you in the future.

Regardless of your past experience, it is always a good idea to get vaccinated to decrease your chances of getting the flu or giving it to someone who is at high risk, unless your doctor has told you that you should not.
