On the evening of March 3, before going to bed, a member of the crew-Grand Princess cruise ship owned by Carnival, the largest cruise operator in the world-sat down to write in her diary. “What a rough day at sea!” he wrote. The weather is never good because the ship left the port of Hilo, Hawaii, about a week earlier, to the Mexican port of Ensenada, took about thirty-five hundred people, almost a third of their crew. Passengers, she had watched the line-dancing happily on the previous day, the “wobbling about the ship,” and the loud banging of the waves and the movement of passengers made sleep impossible.

In the course of the next week, members of the crew, which I will call Margaret, noting the usual, as the days passed with increasing frustration and fear. (He asked me not to identify himself, for fear of retaliation from Carnival.) A member of the crew on cruise ships more clear-eyed than the average vacationing passengers about the potential for things that are not right when thousands of people floating together in middle- sea. And Margaret had heard about Diamond Princess, another Carnival ship, which is off the coast of Japan for two weeks in February, because the people on the ship have been infected with something called a coronavirus. (More than seven hundred people in it are infected, and at least eight died of the disease.) Even so, diary captures the uncertainty and fear brought about by the face of the virus directly, and halting and how uneven that information on outbreaks is delivered and received, not only on board but elsewhere. It also reflects how differently the virus has affected them with the freedom and the resources to get out of the way, or treated, and those who do not.

“Receiving a notice today for all the crew,” Margaret wrote, on March 4. Crew-to-passenger contact will be kept to a minimum. Food and beverage service for passengers will not be changed, but “the crew must remain below the deck except run their regular duties.” No reason was given why. The vessel will be transferred directly to San Francisco rather than move on to Mexico. The passengers have not been made aware of this change. sanitary protocol will now be in “the maximum level,” noted Margaret; hand washing is “more important than ever.” Later that day, another message arrived. All tasks that are not important at the Grand Princess will be canceled, because some of the guests who have sailed on a cruise before the ship had been tested positive for coronavirus that, once they get off

Crew “are now working around the clock,” Margaret wrote, on March 5. Guests have been told to stay in their staterooms, which puts a strain on room service. A helicopter landed on the ship as Margaret anxious eat her lunch. “Moments later we all saw it on TV that a helicopter had dropped off test kits for passengers who show symptoms similar to the flu,” he wrote. Entertainment for the crew-games, movies, dancing-closed or reduced. The crew bar is now sold only water and cigarettes. (The tap water in the vessel is not good to drink, Margaret told me. There were drinks at meals, but if not, you need to buy a bottle of water you can buy two bottles a day, for fifty-five cents each.) The crew of the store offered a little more than potato chips and pretzels. “The crew seemed to panic-buy whatever they can in fear that they might not get out of this boat for a long time,” wrote Margaret. weather, meanwhile, has improved. And next cruise has been canceled.

On the afternoon of March 6 in the cafeteria, she heard that some of the crew had tested positive for coronavirus. “I do not believe, but moments later, Mike Pence spoke live on BBC World News,” he wrote. Pence said that twenty-one of forty-six people who tested positive, nineteen of their crew. Pence also confirmed reports of infection on a cruise before the ship, in February. “It is important to note that the Grand Princess is actually the second tour and we know coronavirus infection from the first tour, the results are very, very difficult,” he said. He added, “The American people can be sure that there will be no erosion in preventive measures and efforts to maintain a coronavirus spread across the country.” Margaret wrote, “When I look around the ship and realize this virus could have spread since February 11 I became anxious. Nerves for the passengers and crew who do not know. “

The onboard medical center immediately overwhelmed with calls and visits, especially after the captain insists that what is said on TV Pence was accurate. “He was angry that he apparently had not been informed before the media,” wrote Margaret captain. “I think many of us were surprised to [sic] and feel like we’re able to continue in the dark about the possibilities and potential of the case.” From the box on a table on the deck to sit, he grabbed two surgical mask-he heard there were some in the medical center, but that they were running low and gloves, because there was “no talk of isolating the crew. “He shared a cabin with another crew member and a bathroom with two more.

The crew had hoped to dock in San Francisco on March 7. Instead, they were told that the ship will sail in a circle, near the beach. It seems that the passengers will get off first when the ship finally docked. “We are working in different shifts 24 hours a day to try and keep passengers fed and happy,” wrote Margaret. The crew delivered the bags of gifts, food and drinks for the room. Steward was no longer clean the cabin or linen. “This ship is like a ghost ship in the corridor, except for the local crew,” wrote Margaret. Space crew smoke was “busy as usual,” and Margaret wondered “whether this will spread more of the virus.” He heard that some crew members were infected were isolated, but there does not seem enough to isolate all the spare cabin crew were experiencing symptoms. “Not all the crew wear masks or gloves, and we sit and share a table and conversation as if nothing had happened,” he wrote. “Going down in the elevator to my cabin I realized how much the crew to share a space elevator. Is this going to be all right? “

Work continued, often for twelve hours a day. Margaret got up at five to fold napkins, after less than six hours of sleep. Ship is still docked; it will be sent across the bay, to the port of Oakland. “Passengers become irritable,” wrote Margaret, on 8 March. He did not eat that night, as she was too tired.

9 In March, around lunchtime, the ship arrived in Oakland. Passengers from California, and they are considered most vulnerable to health problems down. Canadian passengers are also able to leave: after the US government requested Canada help repatriate their citizens, the Canadian government arranged for a plane to fly them to a military base in Ontario. The helicopter circled the ship, and Margaret watched crew members escorted passengers to the open deck to watch. “There were people dancing,” he wrote. “I think maybe this is to get some good footage for the media to make the situation appear better than it was.”

Back downstairs, passengers complained about not being able to go outside, or smoke, or drink, but Margaret did not know what to say. He did not eat or go outside all day, either. “They ran out of medicine, fresh clothes,” he wrote of passengers. “Some do not have windows or balconies and feel trapped and isolated.” The food is better, at least, probably because fresh rations. “The crew has begun trading,” he wrote. “It’s starting to feel like a floating prison. I have some wine in my cabin that I have traded for some chips and chocolate tonight. People trade laundry detergent to shampoo, beer for a dollar. ” In her windowless cabin air felt thick. She and her roommate feel unwell. The medical center can only accommodate emergencies. Everyone was instructed to call a phone number.

On March 10, Margaret wrote his last diary entry on the ship. He began to feel paranoid. “I wash my hands every chance I get, carrying around hand sanitizer,” he wrote. “Some of the crew to act as a security guard almost, restrict passengers.” He added, “Many of the passengers who call Bug Boat, Corona Cruise, or Diamond 2.”

“I’m afraid we’ll be left behind, kept at sea,” he continued. “My heart is worried, my family so much and worry. And I paid for a bottle of still water. ” Passengers have been told about a refund and a free future cruise ship, but the crew still do not know whether they will be fully paid for their contracts. “Honestly I feel like I’m in some kind of nightmare, “the entry concludes.

Today, some of Florida on the board filed a lawsuit against Princess Cruise Lines, seeking more than one million dollars in damages, for negligence. They accused the ship sailing though “knowing that the ship was infected from the previous two passengers who came down with symptoms COVID-19, and has sixty-two passengers.” Princess Cruises issued a statement in response to this claim, insisting, “Our response this whole process has focused on the well-being of our guests and crew within the parameters mandated on us by the government agencies involved and medical understanding of the new developing this disease.”

Wednesday, Margaret sent me an audio recording of a male voice that he said the captain spoke through the intercom to crew still on board. The sound of it was confirmed that salaries will continue only “through your government-mandated quarantine period” of a few weeks. Some of the crew have a contract that lasts for months again. “Currently there is no decision to contract the salary of the people through the entire period of the contract is left to them, after they arrived at the house,” the man said. You can hear Margaret screams of dismay as she says this. When asked about the recording, Princess Cruise Lines spokesman said, “The compensation for all members of our team during this break is currently under review.” On the company’s Web site, there is a link that reads “*** UPDATE *** Latest news about Corona,” which, in this paper ,.

During the weekend, the remaining passengers got off the Grand Princess; boats leave Oakland on Monday afternoon, after a series of delays. It returned to San Francisco, where he would stay while the rest of the crew completed the fourteen-day quarantine. According to a news reporter with KTVU, three hundred and forty crew still on board.

Margaret back in his home country, where he was in isolation for two weeks, as a “high-risk cases. “He sent me a message last weekend. “I woke up and I need to have my cell phone and available for call someone to check on me every day now and I need to be tested and get results but I have no symptoms and have an assessment brief phone call a few hours ago.” He said that he was still in shock. “At least I’m still young and likely to recover if I have it,” he said. “I count my blessings.” When I got up again, on Monday morning, he was still waiting to be tested, as most of the crew members he had spoken to or send a message. He was in a frame of less expect mind. “I’m disappointed, frustrated, angry,” he told me. He adding, “it felt like we were just going to forget this moment.”
