The symptoms have been easy to handle. The health care system has not.

Nearly a dozen calls with five health care providers more than five hours. Two hours of music continues. Two hours in the hospital. Four days anxiously checking an online portal for the results. And a lot of confusion.

That’s a winding road through a bureaucracy that took me from placing my first phone call last Wednesday to get my positive coronavirus test results on Monday night. Five days in limbo.

I was 33 years old and healthy without existing respiratory conditions, so that the disease itself is perfectly maintained. It feels like the flu middle class, with some additional cough and chest pain.

But the process to get me here is a maze of inefficiency, and I’m one of the lucky ones.

Wednesday, I woke up with a cough and chills. The first thing I do is Google my symptoms.

I brushed it off, thinking it was all in my head. But after a few times throughout the morning, the fever began to show: 99.9 degrees. coughing and I was soon at 100.2.

After some encouragement from my roommate, I called my doctor’s office. Someone reduce symptoms and put me on hold, after that I was told that I should call urgent care to get the exams.

“Is there somewhere you can refer me?” Ask me.

“Just Google ‘urgent care NYC,'” the woman on the phone told me, adding that I could also try CityMD, local walk-in clinic for testing.

I call CityMD location, but were told that no, in fact, it does not give the test. Again, I ask for a referral to a place.

My roommate is now pitching, call the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in one room while I called, the city’s public hospital system, others. After about an hour on hold, he managed to get through to someone at C.D.C. At that time, my temperature was 101.7 degrees.

My roommate handed the phone to me and a woman on the phone reduce symptoms and demographic information, and then put me back on hold. A few minutes later, he was back on the phone and told me that someone would call me back with more information and, in the interaction of the most topsy-turvy days, advised me to contact my doctor’s office and send it to visit to learn the correct protocol.

For people with Covid-19 that had mild symptoms, there is not much to do. Take medication if you have a fever, and. The greatest battle we face now is the cabin fever.

But our experience reveals that the agency is accused of helping us just as confused as we were.

Some people have told us that they were doing their best, but they just do not quite know what to do – although, to be clear, every nurse, doctor and health care workers we encountered were very helpful, and hospital staff could not be more entertaining.

But finding solid guidance takes hours of time and a lot of energy, and for those without privilege I, the process will be exponentially worse.

However, there are signs of improvement. In New York, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has been pushing for, and the number of tests between Monday and Tuesday morning this week. First open state, in New Rochelle, with centers more on the way. And Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Tuesday that on Thursday the city will be able to test 5,000 people every day, not just a few hundred.
