Passing through the airport in Hong Kong and Tokyo this week to highlight the differences in the approaches of the two hubs of Asia in dealing with the new coronavirus pandemic
Arriving in Hong Kong. After landing directly onto the tarmac, we were taken to a quarantine area on the lower level of the airport.
There we underwent several medical examinations and security. My temperature taken, and I filled out a detailed questionnaire about the history of my trip. quarantine officer gave me a list of instructions for after I left the airport, including that I take my temperature twice daily and report any abnormal symptoms immediately to the Ministry of Health.
If I were to land in Hong Kong today, it will be more stringent.
The local government announced this week that anyone arriving from a foreign country is required to self-quarantine for two weeks, and is likely to issue a bracelet electronic monitoring that will alert the authorities if they leave home or their hotel
arrived in Tokyo .. When I arrived at Narita airport in Japan this week for our plane stopped at the gate as usual
I walked freely through the airport, more than 500 meters into the quarantine station where approximately 10 quarantine officers hurriedly trying to process all the people who come from my flight.
no one took my temperature, though I walk through the thermal camera scanning to high body temperature. But it was a cold night and many of the passengers were bundled up in coats that could hamper the ability of the camera to get an accurate reading.
I gave my quarantine officers to sign the English form asked me to stay in my home for 14 days, checking my temperature daily, and avoid public transport.
This is just a request, and not enforced. I followed the recommended protocol, but there’s nothing stopping me from everywhere I please.
But without a comprehensive test, it is difficult to know whether quiet in Tokyo is a true picture of the situation coronavirus in Japan – or if it was actually quiet before the storm
