PROVIDENCE, RI (WPRI) – Governor Gina Raimondo announced Wednesday that Rhode Island public schools will remain closed until April 3 to deal with the coronavirus pandemic , after the state identified 10 new positive cases of the disease.

“I have never been more proud to be a Rhode Islander,” Raimondo said during his daily briefing coronavirus. “The expression of kindness and patience and generosity that I received daily – it is excessive, encouraging it, it gives me hope, and that’s what makes me say with confidence that we will get through this.”

“It will be difficult. It will be longer than we wanted, “he said. “But there is a recovery in the end.”

School has closed in Rhode Island this week after Raimondo decided to move up their April vacation so that educators can prepare longer closure. They are expected to offer a plan for the next two weeks distant learning while students continue to remain at home.

“It’s not a holiday,” said Raimondo. Speaking directly to the students, he stressed the decision does not mean a two-week vacation, and that students should expect to learn at home and doing homework.

“This is a difficult decision, and it would be difficult to execute,” said Raimondo. “Many other countries have just throw in the towel. … I do not want to give up because I think some learn better than not learning. ” He thanked the teachers and parents to be flexible.

The decision will be made later on whether the school will reopen after April 3. “I think it’s very unlikely,” Raimondo admitted. “But we will go through the next two weeks.”

There are no decisions made at the child care center last Friday, with Raimondo said they were advised on what to do on a “case -by-case basis.”

on the new 10 COVID-19 patients, the Department of Health Director Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott said they are seven women and three men, and they ranged in age from their 20s to their 70s , Four were hospitalized, although one could be discharged on Wednesday. They have traveled to countries including Iceland, Amsterdam, Spain, England and France.

Alexander-Scott said the increase in cases is expected. “People should pay attention to our recommendations,” he said. “This is not an overreaction. This is information that needs to be taken seriously. “

‘We’re not going to cancel school on and off the economy unless we think that that is absolutely 100% necessary,” said Raimondo. “What we do throughout the day to consult with the experts is to look at the model to try to figure out what the path looks like?” The state is trying to buy more time “to ready the system for cases,” he added.

Just supply of medical equipment, including but not limited to testing kits, continues to be a challenge. Raimondo and Alexander-Scott said they continue to press the federal government to send swabs more and more masks and other personal protective equipment for front-line health care workers.

On unemployment benefits, the state revealed Wednesday that because COVID-19.

Raimondo said the “unprecedented” rise will strain fund state unemployment insurance, but he still urge anyone out of a job to apply online for benefits and be confident they’ll be paid

on utilities, Raimondo said RI Public Utilities Commission has issued an emergency order mandating that all utilities regulated -. electricity, gas, water and sewer – can not stop the service for any reason other than safety during the 19th COVID emergency.

“If you are in a position to pay your bill, please pay your bill,” said Raimondo. “This is not a blanket excuse for not paying your bills.”

Speaking of individual businesses, Alexander-Scott said Health Department officials “strongly urged” all gyms to close, noting that many already. He said a hair salon and barber can remain open, but had to work to keep the number of customers at one time low.

“When in doubt, just stay home,” he said.

on health insurance, Raimondo he signed a new executive order Wednesday requiring all insurance companies doing business in Rhode Island to pay “all visits tele-medical health right” on the same level as the office visit. He said the executive order on the topic that he signed last week is not wide enough.

For health professionals, Alexander-Scott announced emergency regulations that allow any health professional who has a valid license in another state to obtain 90-day temporary license to practice in Rhode Island, too.

In the budget, Raimondo says “revenues will take a serious hit” because the sudden slowdown in the economy and the casino closed. He said the options are being examined to utilize capital markets for more money in the short term. He said the restaurant still need to submit their sales tax revenue to the state on Friday, but said that the establishment of individual will work on a case by case basis. He also ruled out stopping the truck toll.

One of the few budget relief came in Washington, where the US Senate voted to approve a Coronavirus Family First Response Act passed the House on Saturday morning. office of US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse said the bill could mean about $ 150 million in additional federal funding for Medicaid programs Rhode Island.

In philanthropy, Raimondo announces that Bradford Soap Works of West Warwick donated 70,000 cakes of soap for Rhode Islander to be distributed through the Rhode Island Community Food Bank and Family Services of RI. Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence distribute Stop & Shop gift cards to people who need help buying food, and COVID 19 Respond Fund.

“We’ll get through this, but I don ‘t know how long it would be,” said Raimondo. “It’s months not weeks.”
