The state of New York now leads the nation in people who were confirmed to have COVID-19. “I do not believe we will be able to flatten the curve enough to fill the capacity of the health system” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo warned in a press conference on Monday. While the state to fight the rising floods that began to flood the state hospital, other countries with fewer confirmed cases may be just days or weeks behind New York.

The nature of exponential growth of viruses like the coronavirus means that trajectory, or curve, of the number of people who have COVID-19 even more important than quantity when trying to understand the potential risks of an outbreak. Countries that have some reports of people with the virus but following the curve of places like New York and Washington, could soon find themselves in the same situation is terrible without preventive measures is strong.

Analysis of the data center ,, Disease Control and Prevention show that many countries, such as New Jersey, Colorado, Florida, and Louisiana are on the path that is similar to the New York already, with others following closely behind. These figures are based on the current number of people confirmed with COVID-19, which may be significantly lower than the number of actual cases because of limited testing across the US

Experts warn that while the testing capacity is not adequate where -Where, the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in countries outside of New York and Washington may be lower in part because even less testing at the beginning of the outbreak. “Every single place that test the capacity ramps up, we would expect these figures rose substantially. Whether it’s a pretty steep as New York we would not know, but we hope that the numbers will go up substantially,” says Dr. Katharine Bar , a professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Take precautions such as closing schools, isolating all cases of the disease, and not gather in groups can help slow the rise in other countries, before they reach the level seen in New York. “I do not think it would mean that there is an exponential rise, but it will be slower rise exponentially, and the peak will not be as high” says Dr. Ira Longini, a professor and co -director of the Center for Statistics and Quantitative Infectious Diseases in Emerging Pathogens Institute of the University of Florida. “Doing all of these things save lives, and it helped. I do not think we can stop the exponential rise though, just slow it down some. “

Italian has seen the number of patients who are ill with COVID-19 rose to levels beyond the capacity of the health system and about who gets priority in care and access to the intensive care bed. The US as a whole is on the same trajectory to Italy and other countries that have seen the largest outbreak.

As the virus continues to spread across the United States and more patients received the test, the number of people confirmed to have the virus every day across the country continue to grow.
