Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., Saying on Wednesday that he tested positive for COVID-19, making him the first member of Congress to contract coronavirus.

Updated 11:10 ET

Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart and Ben McAdams every Wednesday night that they had tested positive for COVID-19. They are the first two members of Congress to announce a positive test for the new coronavirus.

They both said they were experiencing symptoms and have self-quarantine.

Diaz-Balart, 58, and McAdams, 45, both on the floor of the house as recently, when lawmakers passed a coronavirus aid package.

The three other members of Congress said Wednesday night they will self-quarantine because they are in contact with a positive MPs. Rep. Steve Scalise, the No. 2 Republican in the House, said he himself quarantined because he had an extended meeting with Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart last weekend. Scalise said he did not experience any symptoms and will continue to work remotely in response to coronavirus Congress. She said she decided to self-quarantine based on guidance from the Congress Attending Physician.

Rep. Drew Ferguson after Congress attending physician told him he came into contact with members of Congress who have tested positive for Covid-19, but did not specify who.

Rep. Ann Wagner he “participated in a small group meeting with a colleague who has since tested positive for COVID-19.”

A GOP leadership aide said the attending physician for Congress, Dr. Brian Monahan, connecting with members who may have been exposed. Monahan worked closely with lawmakers increasingly tested, and the test results are positive, he consulted with lawmakers to map out whom they come in contact with to advise them to self-quarantine.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office also shared an update of the attending physician for the MPs said members who tested positive for “pain, but in good condition, they are following CDC isolation guidelines set themselves in their homes.” The office also said it had identified and cleaned up areas at risk.

McAdams, a Democrat who represents Utah Congressional District to-4 includes part of Salt Lake City, said he developed a “mild, cold-like symptoms” on Saturday night, which then deteriorate into a fever, cough and breath wheezing. She said she “immediately isolated” in his house.

Diaz-Balart, a Republican who represents 25 Florida Congressional District, which includes Miami-Dade County, said in a statement that on Saturday evening he developed symptoms, including fever and headache.

He was in self-quarantine in Washington, DC, something which he said began “in an abundance of caution” after the vote on an aid package coronavirus.

He said he did not return to South Florida because his wife, Tia, has a pre-existing condition that makes it high risk of developing severe disease if she contracts the virus.

On Wednesday, Diaz-Balart told that he had a confirmed case of the virus that spread quickly across the United States.

Diaz-Balart and McAdams are now among more than 7,700 cases of coronavirus in the country.

“I want everyone to know that I feel much better. However, it is important that everyone takes this very seriously and follow the CDC guidelines to prevent illness and reduce the spread of this virus,” Diaz-Balart said in a statement.

“We must continue to work together to emerge stronger as a country during a try,” he said.

Seven other members of Congress had previously announced they would self-quarantine after being exposed in various places and three staff Hill had tested positive for COVID-19.
