The symptoms have been easy to handle. The health care system has not.

By

Nearly a dozen calls with five health care providers more than five hours. Two hours of music continues. Two hours in the hospital. Four days anxiously checking an online portal for the results. And a lot of confusion.

That’s a winding road through a bureaucracy that took me from placing my first phone call last Wednesday to get my positive coronavirus test results on Monday night. Five days in limbo.

I was 33 years old and healthy without existing respiratory conditions, so that the disease itself is perfectly maintained. It feels like the flu middle class, with some additional cough and chest pain.

But the process to get me here is a maze of inefficiency, and I’m one of the lucky ones.

– even those who have severe symptoms or who are vulnerable -. face obstacles after obstacles when they try to get answers

Wednesday, I woke up with a cough and chills. The first thing I do is Google my symptoms.

I brushed it off, thinking it was all in my head. But after a few times throughout the morning, the fever began to show: 99.9 degrees. coughing and I was soon at 100.2.

After some encouragement from my roommate, I called my doctor’s office. Someone reduce symptoms and put me on hold, after that I was told that I should call urgent care to get the exams.

“Is there somewhere you can refer me?” Ask me.

“Just Google ‘urgent care NYC,'” the woman on the phone told me, adding that I could also try CityMD, local walk-in clinic for testing.

I call CityMD location, but were told that no, in fact, it does not give the test. Again, I ask for a referral to a place.

CityMD not know.

My roommate is now pitching, call the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in one room while I called, the city’s public hospital system, others. After about an hour on hold, he managed to get through to someone at C.D.C. At that time, my temperature was 101.7 degrees.

My roommate handed the phone to me and a woman on the phone reduce symptoms and demographic information, and then put me back on hold. A few minutes later, he was back on the phone and told me that someone would call me back with more information and, in the interaction of the most topsy-turvy days, advised me to contact my doctor’s office and send it to visit to learn the correct protocol.

When CDC called back, someone told someone would call me every few days to check my status; I have not heard of C.D.C. since that.

The whole time, I was detained by the NYC Health and Hospitals. After a few minutes, I got someone who also decrease symptoms and demographic information. But this time, I received some concrete information: isolates for 14 days

I hung up and I thought I had done ;. I have my orders, and my roommate and I am ready to pit with. But about an hour later, NYC Health and Hospitals called back and wanted to schedule a test for me and my roommate the next day.

Why we were given this test is still a mystery. We were two, young people are active, only one of whom had symptoms, and no severe

:. I am fortunate that I can work from home; that I have the flexibility to sit on hold for hours; and that my work lets me leave the next day

Since I got my results, I have friends -. one of them had underlying medical conditions – as well, and none have been successful <. / P>

have been tested in the United States so far, according to estimates by the efforts of the Internet community.

South Korea was testing about 10,000 people every day.

Thursday, my roommate and I walked 40 minutes from our apartment Lower East Side to the hospital because the nurse has instructed us not to take public transport or taxi. (How does a person in poor health have been successful?)

We arrived at the entrance to a special, metal gate at the side of the hospital, and, as instructed, we called the nurse to tell her we were there. He met us outside and handed us each a mask before walking us into a locked room waiting area designated as a coronavirus

Here, hand sanitizer is not in short supply .; I counted three dispensers in the waiting room with nine seats. (I disclosed that I worked as a reporter for The New York Times only when requested during intake.)

After an hour or so, we were escorted to a standard hospital room, which must be cleaned so thoroughly after each test it can only be used once an hour. A doctor we can not see calling us from a separate room to ask about the symptoms and potential exposures. We finished the call, and a few minutes later, she entered the room wearing hospital gowns, gloves and breathing apparatus

He explained that we were each given four nasal swabs -. Two in each nostril – to test for the flu and for Covid-19, a disease caused by the coronavirus. I have read that the test feels like swabs stuck your nose in so far as they hit your brain, but it’s nothing dramatic. A quick whirl around the nose.

Doctors discarded gown and gloves, then knocked on the door so that the nurse can open it from the outside. He left, then called back a few minutes later to tell us to continue to isolate and call 911 if symptoms worsen.

We walked home in our masks and we did not leave the apartment since.

We were told the results would be available after two to three days. Four days later, at about 06:00 on Monday it posted online

In fact, the process proceeds destroyed: .. I was then told that the test results should not have posted online

I told my workplace, along with all the people I had contact with over the past week, and … that’s about it.

For people with Covid-19 that had mild symptoms, there is not much to do. Take medication if you have a fever, and. The greatest battle we face now is the cabin fever.

But our experience reveals that the agency is accused of helping us just as confused as we were.

Some people have told us that they were doing their best, but they just do not quite know what to do – although, to be clear, every nurse, doctor and health care workers we encountered were very helpful, and hospital staff could not be more entertaining.

But finding solid guidance takes hours of time and a lot of energy, and for those without privilege I, the process will be exponentially worse.

However, there are signs of improvement. In New York, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has been pushing for, and the number of tests between Monday and Tuesday morning this week. First open state, in New Rochelle, with centers more on the way. And Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Tuesday that on Thursday the city will be able to test 5,000 people every day, not just a few hundred.

Through it all, I managed to find a little humor in my situation: I found I had a virus on my birthday
