Australia has announced major restrictions on overseas travel, large gatherings and visits to nursing homes in an effort to limit the spread of covid-19.

This country in the early stages of an outbreak of coronavirus, the record so far. About 50 percent of the infections have been contracted while traveling, 14 percent of a person with the virus and the rest have no clear source or are still being investigated.

On March 18, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced to try to contain the virus. Blanket is now in place was requested Australia not to visit another country. Meeting indoor ban non-essential more than 100 people have also been introduced, and only two people can visit an aged care residents at one time, and only for short periods.

These steps build the existing rules were implemented on March 16, including a 14-day period of self-isolation is mandatory for anyone arriving from overseas, a ban on cruise ships docking in Australia, and the prohibition of outdoor meetings of more than 500 people.

Australian government has also launched an advertising campaign to educate the public about hand hygiene and asking where possible that people stay at least 1.5 meters from each other, paying by card instead of cash handling, shop online and just catch public transport at quiet times.

Many Australian companies, including some of the major banks, telecommunications companies, law firms and consulting firms, have asked their staff to work from home.

these steps “really what we need right now,” said Kathryn Snow at the University of Melbourne. They are not as strict as that imposed by some other countries, such as Italy, which are under tight lockdown, or Austria, which have banned meetings of more than five people, but that’s because the virus does not seem to spread widely in Australia, he said.

Snow said a lot of “home-brewed modeling flying around on the internet” predict that Australia will soon become like Italy, where more than 2500 people have died from covid-19, but he says this is misleading and driving unnecessary public panic. The modeling flawed because it does not take into account the impact of new control measures Australia, which should slow the spread of the virus, he said.

There was a call for Australia to close schools, but the snow did not believe this action is necessary because the students do not seem to spread the virus at this stage. Singapore, which has been so effective that contain viruses, has made the schools open.

Because of the lack of testing kits, are those whose symptoms and have recently traveled, had close contact with someone with the virus, jobs in health care, or have described severe pneumonia. The state medical chief Brendan Murphy said in a March 14 that an adequate level of testing because of “community transmission is very low at this time”.

The government announced on March 18 that he had imported the other, but did not say whether it would expand testing criteria. Raina MacIntyre at the University of New South Wales believe it should follow the advice of the World Health Organization to “test, test, test” to identify and isolate infected many people as possible before they spread the virus to others.

This time, Australia has enough hospital intensive care beds, ventilators and other equipment to a small number of seriously ill patients covid 19 they currently manage, says Simon Judkins at the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine. However, he was concerned that hospitals would be overwhelmed if the virus containment measures the government is not working and the case numbers rose rapidly, especially as the country heads into the annual flu season.

“We’ve had conversations about ethics protocols and guidelines about who will be given access to the ventilator if they become overwhelmed by the demand,” he said. “Doctors may have to make some very difficult decisions.”

To prepare for a sudden spike covid 19 numbers, many hospitals Australian obtaining ventilator and extra planning to cancel elective surgery, which will free up beds for intensive care patients and also make surgeons and anesthesiologists available to assist intensive care physicians, Judkins said.

Snow optimistic that Australia will be able to slow the spread of covid-19 enough to prevent overloading the health system, as long as the government and society to adapt quickly to the evolving situation. “We have seen places like China, Hong Kong and Singapore to get this thing under control, so we know it can be done, we just need to work together to do this,” he said.

Morrison said he would meet with the leaders of the state and territory again on March 20 to discuss whether further restrictions are needed to help slow the spread of covid-19 in Australia
