Editor’s note: This story was recently updated February 21, 2020.

This year’s flu vaccine was 45% effective against the flu so far this season, new figures show.

It works against strains of B flu (50% effective) of a strain (37% effective.) And overall it works better in children and adolescents aged 6 months to 17, with level effectiveness of 55%.

vaccine effectiveness levels typically range from 40% to 60%, the CDC said, and the vaccine can help prevent illness, hospitalization and death.

news comes as flu activity remains high.

After increasing for several weeks, the number of cases descreased little, said.

An A strain of flu remains of more common now. At the beginning of the season, strain B is more common.

A B virus has diganosed more among children and young adults aged up to 24 years, while the A virus has been more common among adults 65 and older. Of the 105 child deaths from flu, 72 associated with the virus B.

Previously, officials have said this year’s flu season is on track to be one of the worst in decades.

Agency estimates that there have been at least 29 million flu illnesses, 280,000 hospitalizations and 16,000 deaths from the flu so far this season.

Public health officials say that getting a flu shot can help protect against getting sick and hospitalized for flu.

flu is a contagious disease, and can cause mild to severe symptoms along with life-threatening complications, even in young, healthy children and adults. Since 2010, the flu has killed 12,000 to 79,000 people per year in the United States and affects about 9300000-49000000 per year.

Here is what others know about the flu.

The CDC reported extensive activity for the country as a whole in the most for the week ending February 15. The only countries that are not in Idaho, Oregon and Hawaii, along with the District of Columbia. See a map of the CDC.

While you can get the flu anytime, flu season begins in October and can go up to the end of March and even April. But usually peak in the US in February, said William Schaffner, MD, a professor of infectious diseases and preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

In general, everyone over the age of 6 months should get vaccinated – the sooner the better to get the vaccine. The end of September is a good time, Schaffner said, and even into October and beyond. With a length of flu season last year, the idea has been discussed booster shots. Schaffner said the idea was not supported by research

There are many strains of two types of flu viruses -. A and B – which infect humans. In order to have a flu shot prepared for flu season, experts should decide, months in advance, which strains to include in the vaccine. Because the strain can change quickly, the vaccine is not always suitable.

This year’s flu vaccine was 45% effective against the flu so far this season, new figures show.

This works better against strain B flu (50% effective) than a strain (37% effective.) And overall it works better in children and adolescents aged 6 months to 17, with level effectiveness of 55%.

vaccine effectiveness rate usually ranges between 40% to 60%, the CDC said, and the vaccine can help prevent illness, hospitalization and death.

This is offered in doctors’ offices, clinics, health departments, community health centers lecture, pharmacies, and in many offices and some schools.

many insurance plans pay for annual vaccination, and older adults covered under Medicare Part B can get free vaccine, with no copay or deductible.

nasal spray vaccine, FluMist, once again becomes r ecommended by the CDC for adults and children. In the recent flu season, CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends flu shots only for children because of questions about both the spray works. However, manufacturers appear to have improved spray, so the CDC and says parents can go either way -. Shot or spray

Although it did not work well against H1N1 virus, it is against some viruses B and H3N2 viruses. The CDC says manufacturers have produced the new H1N1 vaccine, though no estimate is available yet published effectiveness. It is available for children 2 and older who do not have a compromised the immune system.

During the flu season, experts study samples of the virus circulating to know how well the vaccine protected against those viruses. They use the information to help make their decision for the next one. This year, most of the vaccine will protect against two strains of A – H1N1 and H3N2 – and two strains of B. All the usual dose flu shots this year will quadrivalent, which means they will protect against four strains.

As with all other vaccines, the flu is not perfect, but it reduces the risk of disease from 30% to 60% in the general population, the CDC said. In general, work better vaccines against influenza B and influenza A (H1N1) virus than they do against influenza A (H3N2) virus, CDC said.

The National Institutes of Health recently an initial $ 8 million grant to develop a flu vaccine that will include some of the strains in a single dose. The university is working with 14 other universities in the project. Ted Ross, PhD, director of the university’s Center for Vaccine and Immunology, said they might be able to start testing the vaccine on people sometime next year. Ross said the goal is to help people who are most vulnerable to the flu. Other researchers have been working on a universal flu vaccine, too.

Children, adults older, pregnant women, people with chronic medical conditions, and health workers are particularly vulnerable to getting the flu or have complications such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinus and ear, CDC said.

Children younger than 2 are particularly vulnerable. Those aged 6 months and under are also much more likely to get complications, but they are too young to be vaccinated, so the best idea is to ensure that all people in contact with those vaccinated.

Adults aged 65 years and over are at greater risk than younger, healthy adults because of a weakened immune system. Typically, older adults explain the most flu-related deaths and more than half of flu-related hospital.

Pregnant women and those who have given birth within the previous 2 weeks, more likely to have severe disease than women who are not pregnant.

Anyone with chronic medical conditions are more likely to have complications. These conditions include:

While the quadrivalent vaccine protects against two strains of A and two B strains, CDC says there is no preference between vaccines are recommended and approved. Ask your doctor which is best for you. .. a different vaccine approved for different age groups

About 80% of the supply this year will be a quadrivalent vaccine

For the 2019-2020 season, there are several vaccines:

children who have never been vaccinated against the flu will need two doses, spaced at least 4 weeks.

anyone who got Guillain-Barre syndrome within 6 weeks of a previous flu shot should not get vaccinated, the CDC said. There must also be people with severe, life-threatening allergies of any material known in the vaccine.

The CDC says pregnant women should get the flu shot, but not the nasal spray.

Schaffner says there was never any further research to support the research, published in the journal Vaccine in September 2017, in which the researchers found the link – but could not prove cause and effect – between women who were vaccinated against influenza A (H1N1) strain for two consecutive seasons.

However, previous studies did not find a higher risk, says Schaffner, who is also a professor of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville. And subsequent research found no further evidence to support the link miscarriage, he said. These findings seem to statistical coincidence, he said.

Pregnant women who get vaccinated are also cut off the possibility of flu in their babies, Schaffner said. “Some protection which cross the placenta and protect the baby during the first 6 months” before immunization is recommended, he said.

It takes about 10 days to two weeks for the vaccine to reach peak strength, Schaffner said.

They usually come suddenly from cold symptoms. They include fever, feeling of fever, chills, and have a cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, and fatigue. Less common are vomiting and diarrhea. Children are more likely to have vomiting and diarrhea than adults, the CDC said.

Not everyone with flu has a fever.

Stay home, rest, and avoid contact with other people except to get mediCal care if needed, experts say. Avoid contact with other people for at least 24 hours after fever subsides to avoid the spread of flu.

Be on the lookout for emergency warning signs that you may be getting serious flu-related complications, the CDC said.

In children, among others:

In adults, they include :.

The symptoms that improve but then return with fever and worsening cough

The FDA in 2018 approved the first new treatment in nearly 20 years flu: baloxavir marboxil (Xofluza). New treatment joins three other antivirals for the flu. Oseltamivir (generic or Tamiflu), peramivir (Rapivab) and zanamivir (Relenza)

The antiviral drugs can reduce symptoms and shorten the time you are sick by 1 or 2 days, according to the CDC. It is a prescription drug in various forms, such as pills, liquid, powder inhalation and IV solutions. Ask your doctor whether they are right for you.

They may also have side effects. Tamiflu can cause nausea and vomiting, and it can make headaches and psychiatric effects more likely. And in a recent study, it did not reduce complications.

It’s important to get started early, as studies show that they work best when started within 2 days of illness. But your doctor may decide they can still help if started more than that.

Everyday important preventive measures. Avoid people who are sick, and practice good hygiene such as washing your hands frequently and cover your cough. If you are sick, stay home.
