City of Chicago :: Influenza (The Flu)
City of Chicago :: Influenza (The Flu)

is upon us and some experts said.

A number of questions surrounding the flu, which has seen record numbers in recent years – in the 2017-’18 season – including the most common strain and whether or not to get a flu shot.

Here’s what you need to know about the flu season and the vaccine:

Flu season may begin in early October in North America, but generally, it began sometime in the fall and ends in March. The flu virus, however, can be detected at any point throughout the year, which is important to know if you ever have any symptoms, even in summer. Experts can not predict the severity of each flu season, as different strains of the virus may have a different impact on the time and length of the season.

Yes. With a few exceptions, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone age 6 months and older to get vaccinated each year. This is the first line of defense in treating flu. Although people who are moderate or severe illness should wait to recover before getting the shot. Only people with severe, life-threatening allergy vaccines or ingredients should avoid the shot. According to the CDC, anyone aged between 2 and 50 years of age should get a good shot or nasal spray. The American Academy of Pediatrics, however, said in 2018 that a flu shot is the preferred choice over the nasal spray for children

You can get vaccinated at any time as autumn approaches, but October was probably the best time to complete. Recommends that everyone get vaccinated in late October, which gives your body roughly two-week period, it is necessary to develop an immune response to the vaccine before the start of flu season peaks. If you miss this deadline, however, the vaccine can still offer some advantages. So it’s important to get it as long as people are still dying. For this flu season (2019-2020), all the usual-dose flu shots will be quadrivalent, effective against four different strains of flu.

It is highly recommended that all pregnant women get a flu shot. body changes during pregnancy – heart rate and oxygen consumption, while the increase in lung capacity is reduced. That means if the mother-to-be gets the flu, they are more susceptible to life-threatening complications than the general population. So all women who are or wish to become pregnant should get the flu vaccine. This is all the more important given the recent CDC survey shows that.

No flu vaccine contains inactivated virus, which means that the virus contained in the vaccine can not actually infect you. It does not take one to two weeks for the immune system to protect you from the flu. So, if someone becomes ill after they were shot, most likely because their bodies are not protected from the flu yet, not from the vaccine itself.

Similarly, there is sometimes a mismatch between the virus strain and a person becomes ill with the strains used to make the vaccine. In this case, the vaccine may not be perfect to combat all strains of flu that may exist, but it is still the best defense we have.

Flu symptoms often come on suddenly and can vary significantly depending on the person. These include fever, cough, sore throat, stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and fatigue. While the flu may appear similar to ordinary flu, colds usually slower to develop, and is less likely to result in fever.

Some patients with severe infections may have symptoms – such as difficulty breathing and confusion – which is alarming and may require immediate medical attention to treat them. Medical attention should also be sought for children with the flu who develop bluish skin, not waking up or not eating. In all cases, if the person’s symptoms suddenly worsened after appearing to initially increase, a visit to a doctor is warranted.

In most cases, if mild symptoms, stay at home and just leaving for medical treatment is the best action. If you must leave the house, using face masks, wash hands, and cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow.

People with severe symptoms, as well as those who are at high risk of flu (children, people 65 and older and pregnant women), should contact their doctor if they develop symptoms. In some cases, people may get antiviral drugs, which can reduce symptoms, shorten the time of illness and reduce complications.

Manufacturers have many methodsproducing flu vaccines. The most common method is an egg-based vaccines, where the strain of virus that is injected into the eggs and incubated for several days. They then weakened or killed and then purified for use in the shot or nasal spray.

The next method is through cell-based technology. In this vaccine, the eggs used to incubate the virus is replaced with animal cells. This method is faster in producing vaccines than egg-based methods older.

Another method using recombinant technology. In this case, certain genes are taken from the flu virus, to put in a non-flu viruses that grow in different insect cells. non-flu viruses are genetically modified is then replicate in insect cells. After the virus has replicated, manufacturers purifying a protein produced from flu genes, which are used in the vaccine. The advantage of this method is that it does not use eggs, so people with severe egg allergy can be vaccinated.

For all these methods, the FDA must review and approve the vaccine before their release to the public.

Most side effects are mild and resolve quickly on their own. Pain in the area of the shot is very common. In addition, people may have a headache, fever and nausea. Look for symptoms right away if someone is showing signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, hoarseness or eyes and swollen lips.

A grocery store, pharmacy, doctor’s offices and hospitals are all victims of flu shots. Experts say it does not matter where you get it, as long as you get it.

Flu season starts. Prevent its spread requires good hygiene and vaccination rates are high. If you experience any symptoms, avoid contact with other people. If symptoms begin to gain weight, consult your doctor. Working together will be critical in halting the flu season.
