It is important to note that the number of cases of influenza presented on this page is limited to cases that have had a laboratory test positive for flu (with a quick test, DFA, PCR or culture) PADOH reported to them. the number of these cases represent only a fraction of the actual burden of disease due to influenza occur in the commonwealth at any given time. This is because most people with influenza do not go to the doctor or not tested or reported. Influenza spread and severity vary from season to season. Pennsylvania Department of Health syndromic surveillance system receives data on visits to emergency departments (EDs) of most hospitals in the state. The system looks at the reasons to visit the ED and determine whether ED visits is likely due to influenza-like illness (ILI). The graph shows the ED visits for ILI as a percentage of total ED visits. This provides another way for the Department of Health to monitor influenza and ILI in the state.
