One of the most concerning issues since the emergence of the virus Covid-19 was whether people who have it can get it a second time -. And what does it mean for immunity

Monday, both Sir Patrick Vallance, chief scientific adviser to the government, and Prof Chris Whitty, chief medical adviser to Boris Johnson, trying to convince the public. Those who already have a virus will develop some immunity, they say -. And it is very rare to get a longer contagious disease

The first question arose last month, after the Japanese government said. Scientists left baffled with the news and and also uncomfortable.

Professor Mark Harris, an expert in virology at Leeds University, said reinfection in case it is “impossible”, but added that “there is some evidence in the scientific literature for persistent infection of coronavirus animals (especially in bats ) “.

When Vallance asked on Monday if the Japanese case means a herd immunity no longer be achieved, he said that some people catch a communicable disease a second time, but that it was a rare occurrence. There is no evidence that it will happen with the coronavirus, he added.

Prof Whitty explained that the disease, even if there is no long-term immunity, usually there are some short-term immunity.

Prof Jon Cohen, professor emeritus of infectious diseases at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School, said: “The answer is that we do not know [about reinfection] yet because we do not have a test for antibodies to the infection, although we would have immediately.

“However, it is possible, based on other viral infections, that yes, once a person has had the infection they will generally be immune and will not get it again. There will always be the odd exception, but it’s certainly a reasonable expectation. ”
